Updated: Jun 11

152 Elizabeth Street is a remarkable seven-unit residential complex located in the acclaimed Nolita (North of Little Italy) area of New York City. This enchanting structure is designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, marking his first residential project in the United States. Developed by Sumaida + Khurana, this luxury condominium complex opened its doors in 2018. Nestled at the corner of Elizabeth and Kenmore Streets, it sits just blocks away from popular destinations like Canal Street, Broadway, SoHo, and Chinatown.

The Vision Behind the Design

The interior designer for 152 Elizabeth Street, Michael Gabellini of Gabellini Sheppard Associates, outlined the project’s core design principles. He emphasized creating fluid spaces with minimal walls and doors, allowing for privacy without sacrificing openness. Gabellini’s vision hinged on four essential elements: light, air, sound, and water. Each of these concepts is embodied in the features of the building, including:

  • A stunning decorative water wall in the lobby.

  • A lush green wall on the southern façade.

  • Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that enhance the street-facing façades.

These elements contribute to a harmonious living environment that invites nature indoors.

Architectural Expertise: RHa's Role

RHa was instrumental in the design of 152 Elizabeth Street, providing architectural concrete consulting. Their expertise focused on the concrete structures within the project, including the columns and walls of each unit, as well as the exterior façade. Hired by the Foundations group, which served as the project’s developer and construction manager, RHa’s contributions were vital.

The natural hue of the concrete complements Ando's signature use of organic materials. This choice seamlessly integrates with Gabellini's design philosophy, which aims to infuse warmth into minimalist settings. The careful selection of materials ensures the building remains both inviting and authentically tied to its natural surroundings.

A Testament to Excellence

While 152 Elizabeth Street may not serve as a public facility, it stands as a testament to the excellence of Ando’s architectural vision and the skilled craftsmanship of the entire design and construction team. This project embodies the principles of modern luxury living while respecting the environment and urban space.

As you explore Nolita, take a moment to appreciate 152 Elizabeth Street's facade and the artistry behind its design. It represents a unique fusion of style, function, and sustainability—a true architectural wonder.

Why 152 Elizabeth Street Stands Out

152 Elizabeth Street is not just another luxury condominium; it’s a statement of artistic integrity within an urban landscape. Here are several reasons that set it apart:

  1. Innovative Design Approach: The projects’ emphasis on light, air, sound, and water showcases a thoughtful understanding of the living experience.

  2. Architectural Significance: As Ando’s first U.S. residential project, it highlights his ability to merge architecture with the surrounding environment.

  3. Sustainable Elements: The integration of green walls and natural materials reflects a commitment to sustainability. Such practices encourage eco-friendly living in urban settings.

  4. Luxury Meets Comfort: The design seamlessly blends luxury finishes with the warmth of natural materials, creating inviting homes.

  5. Cultural Integration: Located in a vibrant neighborhood, the building enhances the existing cultural fabric of Nolita, making it a sought-after residence.

In essence, 152 Elizabeth Street provides a unique living experience, combining modern aesthetics with ecological mindfulness. It's a place where residents can thrive in a beautifully designed space that respects both the individual and the environment.
