152 Elizabeth Street is a seven-unit residential complex located in the “Nolita” (or North of Little Italy) section of New York City. Designed by award-winning architect Tadao Ando as his first US-based residential project and developed by Sumaida + Khurana, the luxury condominium complex opened in 2018 at the corner of Elizabeth and Kenmore streets in Lower Manhattan, just blocks from Canal Street, Broadway, SoHo, and Chinatown.

According to 152 Elizabeth Street’s interior designer Michael Gabellini (of Gabellini Sheppard Associates) from the project’s literature, the design of 152’s units was meant to create a fluid space through the lack of doors and walls other than those built to provide privacy, and “required honing in on four main concepts, or elements, that define the interior and exterior spaces: light, air, sound, and water” (Gabellini, 5). A few notable elements of 152 Elizabeth Street’s design reflect this – the decorative water wall in the lobby, the green wall on the building’s southern façade, and the floor-to-ceiling windows that make up the street-facing façades of the building.

RHa’s work on 152 Elizabeth Street included architectural concrete consulting on the concrete structures involved in the project, including columns and walls in each unit and the exterior façade. RHa was hired on to the project by the Foundations group, the project’s developer and construction manager. The natural color of the concrete used in 152 Elizabeth Street fits in with Ando’s use of natural materials in his designs, and melds well with Gabellini’s interior design and his, as described in the project literature, uncanny ability to create warmth in a space while maintaining minimalism and authenticity to the natural materials such as concrete.

Although 152 Elizabeth Street is not a public use facility, it is still a revered example of not only Ando's work, but of the rest of the design and construction teams' expertise as well.
