The Spring Street Salt Shed in Manhattan is a striking piece of civic infrastructure that has become an architectural landmark. Completed in 2015, it was designed to house the Department of Sanitation’s (DSNY) road salt while serving as a sculptural "gateway" to the city at the corner of Spring Street and West Street. Designed by Dattner Architects in collaboration with WXY architecture + urban design, the Salt Shed is the smaller, sculptural counterpart to the massive Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Garage across the street. Winner of the AIA Institute Honor Award (2018), the highest honor in American architecture, recognizing it as a "dignified example of vital civic architecture."
